Communication Therapies
Supporting Complex Communication
At AAT, we specialize in supporting children with language delays, developmental disabilities and individuals with complex communication profiles. We understand that oral speech is just one aspect of communication. Aided communication, such as pictures and speech-generating devices, as well as unaided methods like gestures and adapted sign language, are all valid forms of communication.
Our approach recognizes that complex communicators can benefit from both “high-tech” and “low-tech” aided language techniques. For instance, a preschooler who is still developing her oral language skills may thrive by utilizing printed pictures (low-tech) alongside a speech-generating application on a dedicated device (high-tech). We also recognize that “unaided” language techniques (gestures, body language, etc) are invaluable for people with complex communication profiles and need to be supported. These varied communication methods help promote the development of expressive and receptive language and have been shown to facilitate oral language development as well.
Speech Sound Disorders
We offer speech and language therapy for individuals with Speech Sound Disorders (sometimes referred to as “Articulation Disorders”). Due to high caseloads and special education policies, school-based Speech-Language Pathologists are often unable to support students with articulation errors. Unfortunately, the longer these speech errors are left untreated, the longer it can take for a child to unlearn inaccurate speech sound patterns and replace them with new, accurate speech sound patterns.
